How to automate daily status reports in Slack: Workflow Builder, Zapier or a bot (2026)

You can automate a daily status report in Slack five ways: a recurring /remind that asks the team every weekday, a scheduled Workflow Builder form (paid Slack plans), a Zapier schedule that posts the questions and collects answers into a sheet, Slack AI's daily recaps (Business+), or a standup bot that asks, reminds and summarises for you. The first three automate the asking; you still read and chase. Bots automate the whole loop. Below is what each one does, what it costs and where it stops, checked on each vendor's own site on 23 October 2026.

The five options at a glance

Option What it automates What you still do Cost
/remind in a channel Posts the question every weekday Read the thread, chase whoever did not answer, summarise Built into Slack
Workflow Builder scheduled form Sends a form on a schedule; answers go to a channel, Google Sheet, Slack List or canvas Read the answers, chase, summarise Paid Slack plans; Pro is $7.25 per user a month on annual billing
Zapier: Schedule + Slack Posts the questions on weekdays; can copy answers into a sheet Build and maintain the Zap, read, chase Free for two-step Zaps and 100 tasks a month; multi-step needs Professional, from $19.99 a month on annual billing
Slack AI daily recaps A morning recap of channels you choose Ask for status; recaps summarise conversation, not a report per person Business+, $15 per user a month on annual billing
A standup bot Asks each person, reminds, collects and summarises Read one report Free tiers exist; paid from about $1 to $8 per user a month, or flat prices

Option 1: a recurring reminder (no setup)

Slack's /remind takes recurring phrases like "every weekday". Slack's own example is a standup prompt:

/remind #team Hey team, what's on today? every weekday at 9:45am

People answer in the thread. It is the fastest way to start, and it is enough for a team of three or four. It does nothing else: nobody is reminded individually, and the thread is the report.

Option 2: Workflow Builder on a schedule

Workflow Builder can start a workflow "on a schedule" with a date, time and frequency, and a workflow can send a form. Slack's templates send each response to a channel as a message that mentions the person, or add it to a Google Sheet, a Slack List or a canvas.

How to set it up:

  1. Open Workflow Builder and create a workflow that starts on a schedule; set the time and frequency.
  2. Add a step that collects information with a form, with three questions: what you finished, what is next, what is blocking you.
  3. Add a step that posts each response to the channel, or adds it to a Google Sheet or a Slack List.
  4. Test it with one teammate before rolling it out to the channel.

Workflow Builder is available on paid Slack plans (Pro, Business+ and Enterprise+), not on Free. Pro is $7.25 per user a month on annual billing, or $8.75 monthly.

Option 3: Zapier, Schedule by Zapier plus Slack

Zapier's Schedule trigger can run every day with weekends turned off, and its Slack actions send a channel message or a direct message. A two-step Zap (schedule, then post the questions) runs on Zapier's free plan, which includes 100 tasks a month; each successful action counts as a task, and the schedule trigger does not. Anything more, such as posting and also copying answers into a sheet, is a multi-step Zap and needs the Professional plan, from $19.99 a month on annual billing ($29.99 monthly). Zapier also notes a scheduled Zap may not fire at the exact minute.

A common variant uses Google Forms: the form collects the update and a Zap posts each new response to a Slack channel. Make offers the same with a "Watch Responses" trigger.

Option 4: Slack AI recaps

Slack AI can send "a new recap every morning with what you missed from the previous day" for channels you pick, and on-demand summaries of threads and channels. Daily recaps are on Business+ ($15 per user a month on annual billing) and Enterprise+; Pro gets thread and channel summaries but not recaps, and the separate Slack AI add-on is no longer sold. A recap is a personal digest of conversation, so it helps you catch up but is not a per-person status report.

Option 5: a standup bot

A standup bot does the whole loop: it messages each person at a set time, reminds whoever has not answered, collects the replies and posts or sends a summary. Popular Slack options include Geekbot (free up to 10 users), Standup and Prosper (free for unlimited users), DailyBot, Standuply and Range. We compared them in the best Slack standup bots in 2026.

We make Eodly, a bot of this kind with one difference: connect GitHub or Linear and each person's update sits next to the merged pull request or moved ticket behind it, in one report every evening. Updates the work does not back up are flagged. It is free for up to 5 people and $29 a month for up to 10, and it also works in Telegram and Discord. See a sample evening report.

Which option to pick

  • Three or four people, no budget: /remind, and read the thread.
  • You are already on a paid Slack plan and want answers in a sheet: Workflow Builder.
  • You want a free automation and are comfortable maintaining it: a two-step Zap.
  • You mainly want to catch up on channels: Slack AI recaps, if you are on Business+.
  • You want nobody to chase people and one summary to read: a standup bot.

Questions people ask

Can Slack send a daily standup reminder automatically? Yes. /remind #channel ... every weekday at 9:45am posts it to a channel every weekday, and Workflow Builder can run a scheduled workflow on paid plans.

Is Workflow Builder free? No. Slack lists Workflow Builder as included on Pro, Business+ and Enterprise+, not on the Free plan.

Can Zapier collect daily status updates in Slack for free? It can post the daily question for free with a two-step Zap. Collecting answers into a sheet as well needs a multi-step Zap, which is on paid plans.

Does Slack AI write a daily status report? Not per person. Its daily recaps summarise the channels you choose, on Business+ and Enterprise+.
